A little over two years ago, Bruce and Patricia Buckler had to make a decision. Bruce’s job, working for Cisco as a service provider in the mobility space, had been eliminated. Their children were living in Yonkers, New York, and both of them wanted to be closer to their family. The time was right to consider a move to the United States, and so they set the wheels in motion. Now, as owner of TeamLogic IT’s 100th franchise, Bruce looks back on a journey that has ended in small-business ownership.
How long have you been a TeamLogic IT owner? What were you doing before?
We opened on July 18, 2016. After I got caught up in the Cisco redundancies in September 2014, we began looking at coming to America. I have a manufacturing background, even though I’d been working in IT, so I wanted to get some additional qualifications first. I went back to school and took a degree, and then we began the move to America.
Why did you want to change careers and do something different?
For us to come here legally, we had to establish a business. I looked at freelance software development, since I had the training and skill, but I realized quickly that I didn’t know the U.S. software market very well. It was going to be a lot of trial and error, so I began looking at franchises that would use the skills I had acquired.
What attracted you to the business?
We came across TeamLogic IT, and it seemed to fit what we were looking for. I wanted a seat in the IT industry, and I wanted something I could run on my own. Both of us liked that it was a business that we could build, and that setting it up would enable us to move to America. Being with our kids was the prime objective, and TeamLogic IT’s franchise setup would allow us to start a business that would fairly quickly begin to produce an income for us.
How busy has it been since you opened the doors?
Within our second week of operation we had two break-fix calls and two discovery meetings. We already have another discovery meeting on the calendar, and we’re hoping to close a managed IT services deal with a company that we’ve been talking to a bit. I believe we’re off to a very good start.
What personality or values do you think are needed to succeed as a TeamLogic IT owner?
I have a strong technical background, but that might not be what everyone brings. Having gone back to college in my late 40s after being there in my 20s, I believe I gained the inspiration to try different things. Now I’m moving into a sales and marketing function rather than tech work, and that’s definitely new and different for me. I think you have to be ready to take on a challenge, and to enjoy doing so. This business is going to have me doing many new things, but also keeping my finger in the tech pie, which is an area I’m comfortable with, as well.
How large is the opportunity for your business to grow?
Again, it’s the early days, but I think Yonkers is really primed for us. There are a lot of small businesses here, and it’s a commuter belt for workers in and out of Manhattan. When we looked at the verticals, we found that the medical industry is very strong here, about 48 percent of the first 1,000 companies we looked at in our territory. I think if we just target that vertical alone, we’ll uncover a lot of opportunity.
How do the tools offered by corporate help you market your business and serve your customers?
We’ve concentrated initially on the walking program — walking into businesses and leaving some materials behind. The feedback so far is that our brochure and collateral material is very impressive, and that matches with what I thought when I first researched TeamLogic IT. Now we’re dropping off the “video in a box,” and that shows that we, and TeamLogic IT, are not afraid to try new things. It’s really a top-notch marketing program, and I’d compare it with anything that Cisco ever had to offer.
How helpful are other franchisees when you have questions? How do you work together?
We were given a list of existing franchisees, and we took a broad spectrum. We called people who’d just been in business for a year and some who’d been around seven or eight years. We got offers to come and visit, and we learned what some of the challenges have been for people in different parts of the country.
TeamLogic IT has been very up front and open with us since the start, and they were very good about it. As an engineer, I look at the negative side when I’m evaluating something, so I knew things would be rosy if I only talked to the top 25 percent of businesses. What about the other 75 percent? TeamLogic IT let me talk to anyone I wanted to, and that was very positive. What we learned was that in many cases, people weren’t following the systems that TeamLogic IT has in place as closely as they might, and that was making a difference in their level of success. That struck a chord with me, because I believe in following a system, or a blueprint, when it comes to making something work.
What do you enjoy about the business?
People are very interested in who we are and what we offer. I’m finding that people are quite approachable, and they want to find out what we do. They listen to you, even when you’re just coming in off the street, which both my wife and I are quite pleased by. We are enjoying the work of building up a list of clients, as well as serving the people who have already begun to work with us.
Would you recommend a TeamLogic IT franchise to someone else? Why?
Ask me a year down the road, when we’ve hit our targets! We really do have a very aggressive one-year business plan, and I think I’ll know a lot more when we’ve run through that period. But I certainly think that it’s a good sign that in our second week we are already generating revenue! I can certainly say that everyone has been extremely helpful so far, and we have a very positive outlook.
