Opening a business during social distancing and shutdowns was a challenge this TeamLogic IT franchise owner overcame thanks to strong preparation
Steve Abraham liked everything he heard and saw about becoming a TeamLogic IT franchise owner, and he had no trouble taking the plunge. Even so, he was a little bit nervous about launching his location at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in hard-hit Michigan.
“We opened our doors on May 4, right in the middle of everything,” Abraham recalls. “And Michigan has been locked down pretty tight, much more so than some other states, so that certainly had an effect on what we could do and not do in those early days.”
Training and traveling just ahead of COVID-19 shutdowns
In many ways, however, he says that time was on his side. For instance, he and a group of fellow new TeamLogic IT technology franchise owners wrapped up their TeamLogic IT University stint at corporate headquarters in California in early March — just ahead of mid-March shutdowns across the country.
“I got home the week before, and all during that trip the main worry I had was a long wait at the airport in Los Angeles,” Abraham says. “And even that turned out OK, so we were all pretty lucky that we got in and out when we did.”
A technology business that can be operated remotely
As far as the business itself goes, Abraham says that he and his tech are still working remotely and being technology providers at a time when business operators are really relying on their tech comes in handy. That, coupled with top-shelf marketing advice and communication from the corporate team, as well as being able to sell unique offerings such as managed IT services, also are winning factors.
“We can’t go and do door-to-door marketing and have to make appointments when we want to go in and see someone,” he says. “But we’re working the phones and emails, and doing our online marketing, and we’re able to push some information out there. My father Jerry is my consultant in terms of business operations, and we’ve both owned businesses before, and we’ve been very impressed with all the advice and support we’ve received from the corporate team to help us get started in this very interesting time.”
