TeamLogic IT Names 2018 Franchisee of the Year

Working through a changing client mix while also aggressively recruiting new business leads to success and growth for this franchise team

About a year ago, winning the TeamLogic IT Franchisee of the Year award wasn’t exactly top of mind for Erik Person. Sure, the owner of TeamLogic IT franchise in Schaumberg, Illinois (with offices in Northbrook, Rosemont and Oak Brook), had six years of experience, but he also was facing a situation that can be grueling for a small business.

“We had some challenges to deal with because we lost two of our top five customers,” Person says. “We managed to keep growing, though, and worked really hard on marketing and expanding our footprint — with existing customers and by bringing in new ones.”

Finding ways to adapt and grow

The Persons’ TeamLogic IT franchise, which opened in April 2012, always has operated around that idea of pursuing the widest range of clients possible. It has grown a steady mix of clients vs. several packed into one or two categories of business.

“We have always stayed the course, no matter what happens, and that has often meant going against the instinct of cutting back when things are slow, especially around marketing,” Person says. “On the flip side, when we have months where we are ridiculously busy, that same temptation comes around. We have learned that slowing the pipeline is never a good idea, because we know that what we do today around sales can affect the cycle from 30 days to two years out.”

Managed IT provides continual support

This TeamLogic IT franchise also has maximized its effort around managed IT services contracts, which now account for about 50% of its recurring revenue. That has allowed for less guesswork about planning, but Person is quick to say that any business in the IT sector has to be nimble.

“This isn’t the same business we got into six years ago, and in six years it will be completely different,” he says. “We are gearing up for a growth year in 2019, because there will be a lot of client business around changes in Microsoft products coming in January. I can’t tell you where the other changes will come, but that’s what keeps this business fun and interesting. Tech certainly never gets boring.”
